Meet Joseph Sagaj

Meet the artist behind many of the creative spaces within the new Anishnawbe Health Toronto Centre.

Joseph Sagaj is from a small, remote, and isolated fly-in community in northern Ontario called Neskantaga, located 480 km north of Thunder Bay. As a proud Anishnaabe Artist, of the Sturgeon Clan, Joseph utilizes his art as a method to share his Anishnaabe ancestry and heritage.

Joseph graduated from the Ontario College of Art in 1985 and has since accomplished numerous private and public commissions. His artistic accomplishments include various projects from designing logos, painting murals, and creating a multitude of visual arts.

A few projects in his portfolio include designing the logo’s for the Royal Commission on Aboriginal People, Anishnawbe Heath Toronto, and Miziwe Biik Aboriginal Employment & Training Centre; painting the “Seven Stages of Life” a project for the Ministry of the Attorney General Aboriginal Justice Division and designing the Seneca College 30-foot floor terrazzo installation called the “Circle of Indigenous Knowledge”.

Throughout his 30-year career, Joseph feels honored to share his Anishnaabe ancestry and heritage through various forms of art. He has featured Indigenous knowledge, culture, and teachings at the forefront of his art, with a great pride that is reflected in his final creations.

Stay tuned to see the magic Joseph is creating at the new health centre!
