September is an opportunity to recognize Orange Shirt Day and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, while continuing the learning and reflection that reconciliation asks of us throughout the year.
At Anishnawbe Health Foundation, we invite our community to learn about the history and ongoing impacts of residential schools, listen to Indigenous voices and perspectives, and reflect on the role each of us can play in reconciliation.
Throughout September, there are opportunities to learn, wear orange and come together in community. Wherever you are on your reconciliation journey, we invite you to take part and carry that learning forward beyond September 30.
Wear Your Commitment: Held in Care
This year’s Orange Shirt design, Held in Care, was created by Indigenous artist Joshua Hunt.
The design centres on a mother bear embracing and sheltering her cub. Through the use of positive and negative space, the child is visually held within the mother’s form, representing the importance of creating a safe and nurturing environment for every child.
The bold, minimal illustration was intentionally created for the Orange Shirt, using the orange of the shirt itself as part of the artwork. At its heart is a message of care, protection, hope and healing, and a reminder of what every child has always deserved.
Wearing orange is one way to recognize Orange Shirt Day. It can also be a starting point for continued learning and reflection on the history and ongoing impacts of residential schools.

Come Together With Us on September 29
Later this September, we’re creating an opportunity to come together in community, reflect and take another step on that journey.
On September 29, join Anishnawbe Health Foundation at the Distillery District for a community gathering in recognition of Orange Shirt Day and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
The evening will create space to listen, learn and reflect together as we approach September 30.
