Learning Resources: Delicious Winter Solstice Recipes

The Winter Solstice is a time to honor the earth, slow down, and spend meaningful moments with loved ones.

Sharing traditional dishes during the Winter Solstice is a deeply important ritual, as it allows us to celebrate both the earth’s abundance and the relationships that sustain us. Through these shared meals, communities nourish not only their bodies but also their spirits, embracing the solstice as a moment of inner peace and reflection.

To honor this tradition, we’ve shared some Indigenous recipes below that are cherished classics to enjoy and savor during the Winter Solstice:

Three Sisters Soup
This traditional Indigenous soup features the “three sisters”—corn, beans, and squash—grown together to support one another. It’s a hearty, nutritious dish that combines these ingredients with vegetables and seasonings, celebrating sustainable farming practices.

Bannock

A type of bread adopted by many Indigenous cultures, bannock can be baked, fried, or cooked over a fire. It’s often served with sweet or savory toppings, making it a popular staple for many.

Cedar Tea

Made from the leaves of a cedar tree, cedar tea is a traditional Indigenous herbal drink believed to boost immunity and soothe colds.

Berry Pudding

A beloved dessert made from wild berries like blueberries and raspberries, berry pudding is a warm, sweet treat that celebrates the seasonal harvest and the connection to the land.
